UK Companies Launch an Electric Cargo Airship Project
Georgia Wray Norsten — April 8, 2025An electric cargo airship project by UK-based Evolito and France’s Flying Whales is set to revolutionize how heavy equipment is delivered to remote areas. With the capacity to lift 60 tonnes, the LCA60T airship eliminates the need for costly infrastructure like temporary roads or multiple helicopter flights -- offering a sustainable alternative with significantly reduced environmental impact.
Slated for its first test flight in 2027, the airship will be powered by 32 high-efficiency electric motors developed by Evolito. These motors deliver remarkable power-to-weight performance, enabling zero-emission operation while maintaining high payload capabilities. The LCA60T is also engineered for flexibility, with advanced weather navigation, automated safety systems, and the ability to operate across varied altitudes and conditions.
The aircraft’s design supports wide-ranging applications from wind turbine delivery and disaster relief to mining and construction. With operating costs estimated to be nearly half of conventional helicopter transport and the added benefit of clean energy propulsion, the airship represents a breakthrough in sustainable logistics and energy-efficient aviation.
