Wheat Straw Eating Utensils
IIT Roorkee Has Designed Tableware Using Wheat Straw
Kanesa D — October 7, 2025The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has partnered with Parason Machinery, a Maharashtra-based company, to develop an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic tableware made entirely from wheat straw.
By converting leftover wheat straw into biodegradable and compostable plates, bowls, and cups, the collaboration provides an innovative and sustainable solution that benefits both farmers and the planet. The new tableware is durable, heat-resistant, and food-safe, making it a practical alternative to disposable plastic products commonly used in homes, restaurants, and events.
The products are designed to return harmlessly to the environment after use, breaking down naturally without leaving behind waste or toxins.
"This research demonstrates how crop residues can be converted into high-quality, environmentally friendly products. It demonstrates the potential of science and engineering to provide environmentally safe and economically viable solutions," said Professor Vibhor K Rastogi of the Department of Paper Technology.
