A Brazilian Port Uses Night-Vision Tech to Protect Wildlife

Ferroport, the operator of an iron ore terminal in Brazil’s Port of Açu, has adopted a high-tech security system that doubles as a light pollution solution. The company installed Axis Communications’ latest low-light video cameras to monitor the port 24/7 without the need for floodlighting. This upgrade was driven by strict Brazilian regulations requiring constant surveillance, but Ferroport also wanted to eliminate light pollution that was disturbing local wildlife.

Since deploying ~20 advanced cameras, the port can capture crystal-clear images in total darkness, allowing it to switch off bright night lights. As a result, endangered native species- including maned wolves, anteaters and others- have returned to the area once excessive lighting was removed. Ferroport noted it has planted over 66,000 trees and protected 1.3 million sea turtle hatchlings as part of its sustainability efforts, and this tech adoption aligns security with those goals.
