McDonald’s Japan Launches the New rPET Strawless Lids to Reduce Impact
Kanesa D — November 4, 2025Starting November 19, McDonald’s Japan will replace its plastic cold drink lids with strawless lids made entirely from recycled PET (rPET), gradually phasing out paper straws for select beverages. Developed over three years, the new lids are designed for convenience across dine-in, takeout, delivery, and drive-thru, allowing customers to drink easily without a straw. The new lids feature a spout mechanism that opens smoothly and is engineered to minimize spills, even with carbonated drinks, thanks to its design that helps manage internal pressure during transport.
“We are currently making steady progress toward our commitment, and by changing the materials used in our containers and packaging between 2022 and 2025, we expect to reduce virgin plastic use by approximately 6,600 tons per year,” says the company.
