Waste-Reducing Injection Molding
Milacron's L-Series Printers Minimize Emissions with Efficiency
Colin Smith — September 11, 2025The Milacron L-Series is a low-pressure injection molding platform engineered for large-part production with structural foam, structural web gas-assist, and solid-part molding capabilities. Its heavy-duty modular design includes platens up to 110 in. by 200 in., support for up to 280 injection nozzles, and shot sizes reaching 400 lb. The current generation integrates a FANUC servo drive package and the MOSAIC+ 21″ multi-touch controller, which offers extensive data collection, self-diagnostics, and automation integration. Nozzle sequencing enables multi-resin or multi-color shots in a single cycle, while optional features—such as twin extruders, remote diagnostics via the M-Powered software suite, quick mold-change systems, and customizable product-handling solutions—help streamline operations and simplify maintenance.
Low-pressure injection molding (LPIM) on the L-Series lowers clamp stress and energy consumption compared to conventional high-pressure processes, contributing to reduced boilerplate mold wear and shorter cycle times. The platform’s structural foam technology introduces a foamed core beneath a solid surface for a high strength-to-weight ratio, permitting thicker wall sections and complex geometries with lighter material usage. Additionally, the L-Series can incorporate up to 100 percent recycled flake material directly into production without re-compounding, minimizing raw material waste. These efficiencies support circular-economy goals by enabling closed-loop recycling of scrap and end-of-life components, while enhanced process controls further reduce energy use and scrap generation.
