P&G Released Its LCA Study on the Environmental Cost of Periodontal Disease

P&G Oral Care published a peer-reviewed life cycle assessment showing that the environmental impact of managing advanced periodontal disease could be up to 10 times higher than maintaining gum health through at-home prevention. The ISO-compliant study, published in the Journal of Dentistry, quantified environmental impacts across care pathways ranging from daily prevention to progressive clinical treatment.

Clinical interventions accounted for roughly 90% of the total environmental impact across the modeled pathway, while at-home routines showed no meaningful difference between manual and electric toothbrushing. A meta-analysis of more than 20 randomized clinical studies found that oscillating-rotating powered toothbrushes delivered significant long-term gum health benefits, with 88% of patients with early-stage gum disease regaining healthy gums using Oral-B iO.

P&G's research shows how preventive oral care can support both health outcomes and reduced environmental impacts by lowering the need for resource-intensive clinical treatments.
