Bio-Based Plastic Assessment Studies
Braskem Has Published Updated Life Cycle Assessment Studies
Kalin Ned — October 10, 2025Braskem conducted Life Cycle Assessment studies for its portfolio of bio-based plastics, which are derived from sugarcane ethanol. These assessments were conducted according to international standards and verified by an independent third party. They serve to quantify the environmental impact of these materials from raw material extraction to the point they leave the factory.
Braskem's Life Cycle Assessment studies indicate a significant reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for these bioplastics when compared to conventional, fossil fuel-based alternatives. The studies further assert that these materials have a net negative carbon footprint over their production lifecycle, meaning they remove more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted during their manufacture.
Braskem's bio-based plastics are used in a variety of consumer and industrial goods, including footwear, packaging, and cosmetics.
