Barry Callebaut Partners with Planet A Foods for ChoViva
Debra John — March 7, 2026Barry Callebaut, one of the world’s largest chocolate and cocoa manufacturers, has formed a commercial partnership with German food technology start-up Planet A Foods to advance more sustainable alternatives within the confectionery industry. The collaboration centers on 'ChoViva,' Planet A Foods’ cocoa-free chocolate alternative designed to reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional cocoa production.
ChoViva is produced from regionally sourced crops such as sunflower seeds and developed through a proprietary fermentation and processing method that recreates the flavor and texture associated with chocolate. By relying on crops that can be cultivated in a wider range of climates, the ingredient offers a more climate-resilient supply chain.
According to Planet A Foods, "ChoViva production can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared with conventional cocoa while eliminating deforestation risks." The alternative aims to support a more stable, environmentally responsible chocolate supply amid climate-related pressures.
