Recyclable automotive material systems are being developed by Cooper Standard through its FlexiCore thermoplastic body seal, which replaces traditional rubber and metal components with a single-material design. By eliminating mixed materials, the seal can be fully recycled at end-of-life while maintaining durability and performance standards required in vehicle manufacturing. The thermoplastic construction also enables weight reductions of up to 44%, contributing to improved vehicle efficiency and simplified assembly processes.
This approach highlights how material simplification can support both environmental and operational goals within the automotive industry. Lighter components can help reduce energy use during vehicle operation, while streamlined manufacturing may lower production time and complexity. As automakers respond to increasing regulatory and sustainability requirements, adopting recyclable, mono-material components could improve lifecycle performance, reduce waste and support more efficient production systems.
