Wildfire Recovery Homes
Signum Architecture Builds a Passive Home in California
Debra John — November 28, 2025Signum Architecture has completed a certified 'Passive House' in Santa Rosa, California, replacing a home lost in the 2017 Tubbs Fire and offering a model for environmentally responsible wildfire recovery. Designed by Signum partner Jarrod Denton, an early U.S. Passive House consultant, the project demonstrates how high-performance building strategies can support long-term resilience while significantly reducing environmental impact.
The home incorporates airtight construction, advanced insulation, and optimized energy systems that greatly lower heating and cooling demands, resulting in reduced operational emissions and improved indoor air quality. Although not a substitute for dedicated fire-resistant measures, the Passive House approach aligns closely with strategies that improve overall building durability.
Constructed within a strict budget, the project "illustrates that sustainable, energy-efficient rebuilding is financially achievable and can increase eligibility for programs such as the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Homes certification."
