Solar-powered bus shelters are at the center of a new proposal submitted to the City of York Council, which outlines plans to replace up to 30 existing bus stops with environmentally sustainable alternatives. The initiative, led by Clear Channel UK, includes the installation of shelters featuring rooftop wildflower and sedum plant beds—known as living roofs—designed to enhance urban biodiversity and improve air quality.

Each shelter will also incorporate digital advertising screens, with revenue from advertisements funding the installation, maintenance, and cleaning of the shelters. This model ensures the project is financially self-sustaining while delivering environmental and social benefits to the city.

Claire Foale, Chief Strategy Officer at the City of York Council, noted that the upgraded shelters will "offer discounted advertising rates for local small businesses and provide the council with a valuable platform for sharing public service announcements, reinforcing community engagement and communication."
