Keratin Protein Toothpastes
Researchers Developed Toothpaste with Keratin to Repair Enamel
Laura McQuarrie — November 19, 2025Researchers from King’s College London developed a toothpaste with keratin, the protein found in hair, skin and wool, that has the potential to naturally regenerate tooth enamel. Dr. Sherif Elsharkawy, consultant in prosthodontics at King’s College London and senior author of the research, explained that: “Unlike bones and hair, enamel does not regenerate. Once it is lost, it’s gone forever.” However, this toothpaste shows promise in repairing tooth enamel and stopping early stages of decay.
Sara Gamea, PhD researcher at King's College London and first author of the study, said: "Keratin offers a transformative alternative to current dental treatments. This technology bridges the gap between biology and dentistry, providing an eco-friendly biomaterial that mirrors natural processes." This innovation not only makes the most of biological waste but also replaces traditional plastic resins with a non-toxic, more durable alternative.
