The University of Chicago has recently introduced a new undergraduate major focused on climate and sustainable growth. As the first degree program anchored in the Chicago Curriculum on Climate and Sustainable Growth, the major is designed to address the complex challenge of balancing environmental sustainability with economic development. Scheduled to accept its first cohort of students in the fall of 2025, the program combines perspectives from climate science, economics, political science, energy technology, and the humanities to offer a comprehensive analysis of the interrelated issues of climate change and sustainable progress.

The curriculum is structured to provide a robust foundational understanding along with interdisciplinary insights that bridge traditional academic silos. Students enrolled in this program will undertake a set of core courses that cover the scientific, economic, and policy dimensions of climate change, and will have opportunities to pursue specialized areas in topics such as technology, politics, economics, or finance. This approach is intended to equip future professionals with the analytical tools necessary to evaluate and address the multifaceted challenges presented by global climate change while considering broader societal needs.
