Totalenergies, Equinor & Shell Run the Norther Lights Initiative

The Northern Lights initiative, a joint venture between three energy corporations, has successfully received and injected its initial volumes of carbon dioxide into a geological formation deep beneath the North Sea. The CO2 was captured from an industrial facility, transported by ship, and stored permanently offshore.
The Northern Lights initiative functions as a commercial service. The project offers transportation and storage capacity to various industrial clients across Europe, with plans already underway to significantly expand its capacity in the coming years. This development is presented as a tangible step in creating the necessary infrastructure to manage emissions from sectors that are challenging to decarbonize through other means. In other words, the project stands as a critical component in the broader effort to achieve net-zero emissions.
