BeZero Carbon Opened Its Tokyo Office to Rate Japan's Carbon Credits

British company BeZero Carbon has established a new entity in Tokyo to rate carbon credits after being chosen from 68 applications across 22 countries for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Green Finance Subsidy Program. The selection places BeZero among seven international sustainability firms helping to build credible carbon credit ratings for Japan's compliance market.

Tokyo's SME carbon marketplace currently uses BeZero's assessment framework, which determines whether a credit effectively avoids or removes one tonne of CO₂. BeZero brings pre-existing relationships with Japanese corporations and backing from Hitachi Ventures and Japan Airlines.

As Japan incorporates carbon markets into its climate plans, BeZero shows how independent third-party ratings can establish the trust needed by major corporate and government buyers before investing capital into credits.
