Eco-Conscious Salt Brines
Clayton Public Works Adopts Eco-Friendly Salt Brine for Road Treatment
Kanesa D — January 13, 2026Clayton Public Works has introduced salt brine as its primary method for treating streets during snowfall and icy conditions. The switch not only enhances efficiency but also minimizes environmental impact compared with conventional dry rock salt applications.
Salt brine adheres directly to pavement, reducing the scatter common with granular salt and allowing it to take immediate effect. Even under light snow conditions, a single application can melt up to an inch of ice and continue working for up to three days, significantly outperforming traditional rock salt.
By requiring less total salt, it reduces runoff into soil, streams, and nearby ecosystems, supporting Clayton Public Works’ broader commitment to greener, more sustainable infrastructure practices. The principles behind salt brine can be applied to driveways, parking lots, and pedestrian walkways, providing safer surfaces without the ecological cost of excessive salt use.
