Eco-Friendly Whisky Bottles
Stirling Distillery Considers Aluminum Bottles as an Alternative
Debra John — January 17, 2026Eco-friendly whisky bottles are central to Stirling Distillery’s exploration of lower-impact packaging options as it seeks to reduce the environmental footprint of its whisky production. The Scotland-based distillery is assessing aluminum bottles as an alternative to traditional glass, recognizing packaging as a significant contributor to carbon emissions across the spirits supply chain.
Glass bottles can weigh nearly as much as the whisky they contain, increasing transport emissions and energy use—by contrast, aluminum bottles are substantially lighter, reducing fuel consumption during shipping and distribution. Aluminum also offers high recyclability, with established recycling systems that require less energy than producing new material, supporting circular economy principles.
To ensure product quality and safety, Stirling Distillery is working with researchers at Heriot-Watt University, the United Kingdom’s specialist center for brewing and distilling research. In addition to environmental benefits, aluminum packaging allows for thinner materials, efficient storage, and flexible design options. Together, these advantages position aluminum bottles as a potential solution for lowering emissions while maintaining product integrity in the whisky sector.
