Basalt-Based Carbon Credits

Climeworks and Lithos Carbon Launched Enhanced Rock Weathering Credits

Climeworks and Lithos Carbon have partnered to introduce verified enhanced rock weathering (ERW) credits to the carbon market, aiming to expand access to long-term carbon dioxide removal solutions.

Lithos Carbon specializes in CO2 removal by spreading finely ground basalt across croplands, accelerating a natural weathering process that captures carbon and stores it for over 1,000 years. The process is monitored through soil sampling and data analysis to track removal outcomes and improve performance. Climeworks, for its part, has been one of the largest offtakers of ERW credits to date.

This partnership builds on a 2023 agreement to deliver 3.5 million tons of carbon removal credits over more than a decade.

Climeworks and Lithos demonstrate how ERW projects can be developed with measurable results while supporting the continued growth of long-term CO2 removal methods.
