ProAmpac, a global flexible packaging firm, has formed a strategic partnership with Western Michigan University (WMU) to develop next-generation fiber-based packaging solutions. Announced on June 26, the collaboration will accelerate ProAmpac’s 'Fiberization of Packaging' initiative, which seeks to replace traditional plastic laminates with curbside-recyclable or compostable paper materials. WMU’s expertise in cellulose fibers and recycling will support ProAmpac’s R&D teams in creating durable, scalable fiber packaging that meets consumer demand for less plastic waste.

The partnership expands ProAmpac’s network of academic allies and complements its ProActive Sustainability® platform, which drives circular economy innovations. By combining material science with fiber tech, the project aims to bring new paper-based pouches and containers to market that maintain product performance while dramatically improving end-of-life recyclability. This alliance exemplifies how industry and academia are uniting to tackle packaging waste through science-based design.
