Fungal Bio-Ink Systems
The Growink Bio-Ink Ushers in Eco-Friendly printing potential
Amy Duong — August 27, 2025Growink bio-ink ushers in eco-friendly printing potential by introducing fungi-derived pigments that are renewable, vibrant, and biodegradable. Developed with mushroom-based colorants such as MYCO for magenta, YARCEPS for yellow, CHOLO for cyan, and OBSCURUS for deep black, the system provides a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based dyes. The formula also contains inactive bacterial spores that awaken in humid or landfill-like conditions, helping break down synthetic substrates and return them to nutrient-rich soil. This creates a regenerative cycle that transforms printing waste into an ecological resource.
When applied to paper, cotton, or wood, the pigments remain vivid indoors while gradually fading under direct sunlight. This fading allows reuse, reprinting, or composting, extending the life of each material while keeping the process circular. Still in early stages, the project suggests how biotechnology can reshape creative and industrial printing. Growink demonstrates that design and science can merge to deliver tools that reduce waste while promoting sustainability.
