The Hurghada Green City Project Aims to Create Sustainable Tourism
Debra John — August 29, 2025The Hurghada Green City Project is positioning Egypt’s Red Sea region as a leader in sustainable tourism. Led by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the initiative seeks to establish Hurghada as a model destination that balances economic development with environmental preservation.
Supported by "more than three million US dollars in funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project will run through 2028." Its focus includes adopting climate-smart technologies, reducing emissions, and addressing the ecological pressures created by tourism and urban growth. By targeting key sectors such as energy, transport, and tourism, the project aims to safeguard biodiversity while fostering long-term resilience.
A central element of the Hurghada Green City Project is the creation of strategic policies for a green recovery, linking conservation with climate finance. This approach encourages investment in low-carbon infrastructure and sustainable technologies, ensuring both ecological protection and global competitiveness for Egypt’s tourism sector.
