Sustainable Lithium Extraction Methods

YPF Subsidiary and XtraLit Partner on Lithium Extraction
Georgia Wray Norsten — May 6, 2025Through its tech arm Y-TEC, Argentina’s state oil company YPF has joined forces with startup XtraLit to develop sustainable lithium extraction methods. Announced May 5, the partnership aims to pilot Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology that can pull lithium from the country’s salt flats with less water and environmental impact than traditional evaporation ponds.
The cooperation agreement will combine Y-TEC’s research facilities and lithium resources with XtraLit’s proprietary eco-friendly DLE process. Executives describe this as a strategic move to add value to Argentina’s lithium reserves by increasing efficiency and protecting local water basins. The initiative aligns with Argentina’s goal to become a top lithium supplier as EV battery demand soars, while addressing concerns about water usage and ecological damage in the mining regions.
This alliance could be a win-win, elevating both partners in the lucrative battery supply chain.
