OMV Unveils Recycling and Green Hydrogen Projects in Austria

Austria’s oil and chemicals company OMV inaugurated two major sustainability projects at its Schwechat refinery, under the theme 'From Innovation to Impact: Forward for Good.' The first is OMV’s proprietary ReOil® chemical recycling plant, which converts hard-to-recycle plastics into virgin-quality feedstock, advancing circular economy goals. The second is a new 10 MW electrolyzer facility -- Austria’s largest to date -- that produces up to 1,500 tons of green hydrogen annually.

Concurrently, OMV announced a final investment decision on an even larger 140 MW green hydrogen plant in Lower Austria, expected to produce 23,000 tons of green H₂ per year by 2027. These initiatives underpin OMV’s strategy to decarbonize its operations (aiming for net-zero by 2050) and to supply cleaner fuels and feedstocks. OMV’s CEO lauded the moves as a decisive step in transforming the company into a sustainable fuels, chemicals, and energy business.
