Substance-Resistant Package Coatings

Xampla Showcases its New Plastic-Free 'Morro' Coating

UK Bioplastics company Xampla has partnered with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to create a test verifying that its Morro materials are fully plastic-free and exempt from the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). Made from natural plant polymers, Morro coatings and films offer grease and water resistance comparable to traditional plastics, while being biodegradable, home compostable, and compatible with existing recycling systems.

Already used by companies including Just Eat Takeaway, Morro provides packaging producers with confidence that their products are ethical and comply with UK and EU single-use plastics regulations. The collaboration also lays the foundation for a novel verification process that aims to address the lack of a universal method to confirm the plastic-free status of materials, despite growing regulatory pressure.
