Upcycled Rocket-Tank Speakers
Nomura and &Space Project Alter Space Fuel Tanks into Hi-Fi Speakers
Amy Duong — November 8, 2025The Debris Rocket Tank Speaker is the result of a collaboration between Nomura’s R&D division and &Space Project, transforming decommissioned rocket fuel tanks into high-fidelity sound systems. Each cylindrical tank serves as a resonance chamber, with drivers mounted at the top and sound deflected through a spherical plate to create an even, room-filling effect. The project highlights how precision aerospace engineering can be reimagined within the context of acoustic design.
Each speaker preserves the visible welds, textures, and imperfections of the original tanks, allowing traces of their industrial past to become part of their visual identity. Paired with a custom audio composition by DJ Gonno featuring field recordings from Hokkaido’s Taiki launch site, the speakers combine sustainability and storytelling. The result is a sculptural sound object that celebrates innovation, reuse, and the seamless blending of technology and art.
