Waste-Made Vegan Leathers
This Plant-Based Leather Alternative is Versatile
Michael Hemsworth — January 29, 2026This plant-based leather alternative has been announced by SUSMATA AG as a vegan-friendly material that offers the look, feel and versatility of animal-based leather, but in a decidedly more eco-friendly and cruelty-free way.
The material, entitled WASTEA, features a bio-based content ranging from 40% to 95% that's achieved with plant-based residues including tea production waste. The material is lightweight and heat-resistant, while also being water-repellent, antibacterial and PVC-free to ensure it meets the stringent requirements of manufacturers in the premium goods and automotive categories. The material reportedly has up to 80% less CO₂ emissions when compared to animal-sourced leather.
The plant-based leather alternative from SUSMATA will be showcased at the LINEAPELLE trade show in Milan, Italy this February.
