Recycled Cooking Oil Initiatives
Portage County Now Accepts Used Cooking Oil for Free Recycling
Kanesa D — February 19, 2026The Portage County Solid Waste Department has launched a new recycling initiative that allows residents to drop off used cooking oil free of charge at its Plover facility. The program is designed to make disposal more convenient while turning a common household waste product into a valuable industrial input.
The department accepts a range of household cooking oils, including vegetable, olive, canola, peanut, and avocado. To ensure the material can be processed efficiently, the oil must be free-flowing, free of water or other fats, and contain minimal food residue. Residents are asked to bring the oil in sealed containers no larger than 2.5 gallons.
From a business and sustainability standpoint, the program reflects a growing push to recover usable materials from everyday waste streams. Once collected and refined, used cooking oil can serve as a substitute for petroleum-based feedstocks. It can be converted into biofuels, soaps, lubricants, and even certain animal feed ingredients.
