Ameresco and Republic Services have successfully commissioned a new renewable natural gas facility at the Lee County Landfill in Dixon, Illinois. This represents the 15th collaborative energy project between the two companies.

The facility processes landfill gas into a pipeline-quality renewable natural gas facility. It converts 4,500 standard cubic feet per minute of previously wasted methane into nearly 1.2 million dekatherms of clean energy annually. This operation supports Illinois' ambitious renewable energy targets while demonstrating a practical application of circular economy principles by transforming waste into a valuable resource. The project's environmental benefits are substantial, with estimated reductions of 61,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions yearly — comparable to removing the greenhouse gas impact of 70 million gallons of gasoline. The renewable natural gas produced will be distributed through existing natural gas infrastructure, providing a reliable and low-carbon alternative for transportation and industrial applications while enhancing local energy resilience.
