Ameresco has unveiled a $240 million hydropower initiative in Alaska that represents a significant advancement in renewable energy infrastructure for the region.

The Sweetheart Lake Hydroelectric Facility, developed in collaboration with Juneau Hydropower, will generate 19.8 megawatts of clean electricity. This is estimated to be enough to provide a 20% boost to Juneau's current baseload capacity while offsetting over 82,000 metric tons of annual CO2 emissions. This comprehensive hydropower initiative includes not only the hydroelectric plant but also an extensive transmission network spanning 40 miles with undersea cabling, a battery storage system, and interconnection infrastructure that will enhance grid reliability for Alaska's capital city and surrounding remote communities.

Ameresco's development specifically addresses historical energy vulnerabilities in the region, where extreme weather events like the 2008 avalanche caused prolonged blackouts.
