Salmon Packaging Design Competitions
MIT and CMPC Launch Global Contest to Enhance Sustainability
Georgia Wray Norsten — August 13, 2025'The Salmon Packaging Design Competition,' launched by Chilean pulp and paper company CMPC in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), invites designers, students, and agencies worldwide to reimagine eco-friendly packaging for Chilean smoked salmon exports. Focused on the 'Smoked Salmon Charcuterie Board by Latitude 45,' the challenge emphasizes the use of corrugated cardboard from renewable sources to meet both U.S. market sustainability expectations and consumer appeal.
Participants will join a series of online workshops led by MIT’s designX faculty, covering research, innovation, and deployment strategies. Winners will receive cash prizes -- USD 2,500 for first place -- and the chance to travel to Chile. The initiative seeks packaging that enhances brand perception, protects the product, and reflects environmental responsibility. Registration closes 9 September, with final pitches in December.
