Scientists at the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan have successfully developed a self-degrading plastic wrap that serves as an alternative to plastic bags. Made of biodegradable plastic, the wrap dissolves in water and soil without harming the environment while retaining the properties typically associated with synthetic polyethylene.

“Although this wrap resembles traditional polyethylene sheets in appearance and mechanical properties, it is absolutely safe for nature. It decomposes easily in water and soil without harming the environment. Now, this biodegradable wrap can be applied in the food and pharmaceutical industries and can be an important step in reducing the problem of plastic waste,” the report states.

The wrap can be used in the food and beverage industry as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.
