Seaweed Demonstration Plants
Uluu Aims to Transform Seaweed into Plastic for Production Purposes
Debra John — October 31, 2025Uluu is working to transform seaweed into plastic by using it to create a natural and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based materials. The company has raised AU$16 million in Series A funding to build a new demonstration plant in Western Australia and expand its seaweed-based plastic production. The funding round was led by Burda Principal Investments, with support from Main Sequence, Novel Investments, Startmate, and impact investors such as Fairground and Trinity Ventures.
Uluu’s materials look and perform like regular plastics and can be made using the same equipment already used in plastic manufacturing. However, unlike conventional plastics, they are reusable, recyclable, home-compostable, and biodegradable in the ocean—breaking down safely without releasing microplastics.
At full scale, Uluu’s process could capture and prevent about five kilograms of CO₂ emissions for every kilogram of material produced, helping cut global carbon emissions while providing strong, lightweight, and non-toxic materials.
