Sustainable Policy Frameworks

The UN Tourism Agency Creates an Outline for Sustainable Travel

The UN tourism agency (UN Tourism) has published a strategic road map to guide the transition toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible travel in advance of the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism in 2027. The framework is designed to help governments and tourism stakeholders integrate climate action, environmental protection, and resilience into long-term tourism planning.

The road map outlines priority actions to reduce tourism’s environmental footprint, align the sector with global climate mitigation and adaptation goals, and strengthen destinations against environmental and climate-related pressures. It emphasizes protecting natural resources, managing environmental impacts, and supporting low-impact tourism models.

Presented at the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability meeting in Madrid, the strategy reflects international commitment to advancing sustainable tourism systems. UN Tourism positions sustainable travel as a contributor to broader global development objectives, including climate resilience, ecosystem protection, and environmentally responsible economic growth, ensuring tourism supports long-term planetary health alongside social and economic benefits.
