AI-Based Sustainable Tourism Goals
Europe will Utilize AI for Conscious Travel
Debra John — November 15, 2025AI for conscious travel was a central theme in remarks delivered by European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas at the 26th General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization in Riyadh. He outlined Europe’s plan to use artificial intelligence to enhance the visitor experience while advancing environmentally responsible tourism practices across the region.
AI-driven systems can help reduce ecological pressures by forecasting overcrowding at popular destinations, distributing visitors more evenly, and guiding travelers toward less impacted areas. This balanced flow supports the protection of fragile environments and reduces the strain associated with over tourism. AI tools can also monitor environmental conditions at cultural and natural sites, alerting authorities when conservation action is needed.
Additionally, AI-enabled guidance can promote low-impact travel behaviors—such as choosing public transportation or exploring lesser-known locations—helping lower emissions, protect biodiversity, and strengthen long-term sustainability in Europe’s tourism sector.
