Self-Navigating Car Rental Programs

The Faroe Islands Tourism Board Wants to Compact Overtourism
Kalin Ned — July 29, 2025The Faroe Islands tourism board has introduced an innovative approach to sustainable travel with its Self-Navigating Car rental program. The initiative is designed to combat overtourism by redistributing visitors to lesser-known locations.
The Self-Navigating Car rentals follow pre-programmed routes curated by locals, taking travelers on unscripted journeys to hidden gems while bypassing overcrowded hotspots. The system leverages Google Maps technology, enhanced by local insights and data from the islands' earlier 'Google Sheep View' project, where sheep-mounted cameras helped map remote areas.
To participate in the Self-Navigating Car rental program, travelers must agree to surrender control for the day and follow the vehicle's directions without knowing their destination in advance. Three dedicated vehicles are available initially, with plans to expand the technology across the rental fleet at no additional cost.
