The Tourism Sectoral Adaptation Plan Spotlights Climate Issues
Debra John — November 15, 2025Ireland’s Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment has introduced the country’s first 'Tourism Sectoral Adaptation Plan,' a 2025–2030 strategy designed to strengthen the environmental resilience of the national tourism industry. As part of Ireland’s broader Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, the plan focuses on preparing tourism operations for increasing climate-related risks while supporting the protection of natural and cultural resources central to the sector.
The plan emphasizes the environmental benefits of proactive adaptation, including safeguarding landscapes, coastlines, and biodiversity that attract visitors and support local communities. By addressing threats such as extreme weather, coastal erosion, shifting ecosystems, and damage to outdoor attractions, the plan aims to preserve essential ecological assets.
In addition, the strategy encourages tourism businesses to adopt climate-aware practices, reduce environmental vulnerability, and contribute to sustainable resource management. Through these measures, the plan supports long-term ecological stability while protecting the livelihoods that depend on Ireland’s tourism sector.
