Wärtsilä Unveils New Carbon Capture Technology for the Maritime Market
Kanesa D — May 14, 2025Wärtsilä has officially launched its advanced carbon capture technology to the global maritime market, marking a major milestone in decarbonizing ocean-going vessels. Designed to integrate seamlessly with existing ship engines, the solution has demonstrated the ability to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 70%, based on rigorous testing data.
This breakthrough is the result of years of focused innovation—Wärtsilä began developing the technology in 2019 and now operates a dedicated research and testing facility in Moss, Norway. There, the company successfully captures up to 10 tonnes of CO₂ daily from a Wärtsilä marine engine, showcasing the system’s practical viability under real-world conditions.
“CCS is a game-changer for the maritime industry, and we are already seeing huge interest in the market for this solution. Ahead of shipping’s net-zero targets, this new technology complements the industry’s ongoing efforts to dramatically reduce emissions from vessels and prevent stranded assets," said Håkan Agnevall, president and CEO of Wärtsilä.
