Deep Sky, a project developer focused on atmospheric carbon removal, has chosen a region in Southwestern Manitoba as the site for a new, large-scale carbon capture facility. The planned operation is projected to have a total annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes upon completion, with an initial phase of 30,000 tonnes scheduled to commence construction in 2026. Deep Sky selected the location in Southwestern Manitoba because of specific local advantages, including geological formations deemed suitable for the permanent underground storage of CO₂ and access to a primarily hydroelectric power grid, which can provide the substantial renewable energy required for the carbon removal process without generating significant new emissions. Deep Sky's initiative has involved preliminary discussions with Indigenous communities, resulting in a formal declaration to explore collaborative opportunities. Additionally, the large-scale carbon capture facility represents a significant financial investment for the area and follows the company's operational launch of a smaller, testing facility in Alberta.
