Outokumpu is Working with Norsk to Convert to eSAF

Outokumpu and Norsk announced a partnership to convert industrial carbon side streams into eSAF, targeting production of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel using captured carbon and renewable hydrogen. The collaboration is presented as part of a larger Nordic initiative to scale low‑carbon fuels, with project planning focused on integrating carbon capture from metallurgical or industrial processes, electrolytic hydrogen production powered by renewables, and downstream synthesis and refining to meet aviation fuel specifications. Public statements frame the effort as a route to valorize waste carbon while supplying a low‑carbon fuel alternative for hard‑to‑abate transport sectors.
Key implementation considerations include the availability and composition of carbon side streams, the energy intensity of hydrogen production, and the lifecycle greenhouse gas performance of the resulting eSAF. Technical and commercial milestones will depend on electrolyzer capacity, synthesis plant design, fuel certification, and offtake agreements with airlines or fuel distributors. Regulatory approvals, permitting, and the economics of scaling to commercial volumes will determine whether the project can achieve the stated ambition of becoming a major synthetic SAF producer.
