Sustainable Aviation Fuel Alliances

Hawaiian & Alaska Airlines, Par Hawaii & Pono Energy Partner

Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines are partnering with Par Hawaii, the state's largest fuel producer, and Pono Pacific, a natural resource company, to develop a local source for low-carbon jet fuel using a crop called camelina. This coordinated effort seeks to establish a supply chain for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) within the Hawaiian Islands.

The project is notable for its ambition to create a circular economy model, where the camelina plant's seeds would be processed into SAF while its byproduct is used within the agriculture industry for local animal feed. Both airlines will become Par Hawaii’s launch SAF customer, and the projections are that "Hawaiʻi’s first locally produced SAF" will be available in the first quarter of 2026.

Pono Pacific is gearing up to launch Pono Energy in 2026, as well, in order to accelerate its work on camelina.
