Sumitomo Electric Accelerates Decarbonization In Japan
Georgia Wray Norsten — July 16, 2025References: sumitomoelectric
Sumitomo Electric received a third consecutive order for redox flow batteries from Kashiwazaki IR Energy as part of the city's ongoing decarbonization initiative. The 1,000 kW × 8-hour battery system will bring total capacity to 24,000 kWh across three installations by spring 2026, supporting local energy generation and consumption by storing excess solar power during peak production for later discharge during high-demand periods. The flame-retardant, recyclable, and reusable technology operates entirely on renewable energy sources, with all mining operations conducted on servers powered by hydropower, wind, and geothermal resources.
This infrastructure investment demonstrates how municipalities are prioritizing long-duration storage solutions to achieve net-zero targets through renewable integration. Kashiwazaki City, historically significant for petroleum and nuclear industries, is transforming itself into a decarbonized city by promoting renewable energy utilization. The battery systems contribute to energy security enhancement while maximizing renewable energy utilization and enabling cost reduction through wholesale electricity market trading.
