The 6G4Society Aims to Ensure its Social and Environmental Impacts
Colin Smith — November 3, 2025The 6G4Society project seeks to embed societal, environmental, and economic values into the development of 6G technology by creating frameworks and measurable indicators that align technical progress with sustainability and social acceptability. It advances concepts such as Sustainability-as-a-Platform, circular resource marketplaces, and Key Value Indicators (KVIs) and Key Sustainability Indicators (KSIs) to shift evaluation from traditional performance KPIs toward metrics that capture energy use, material circularity, inclusiveness, and trust.
To operationalize these objectives, 6G4Society emphasizes early public engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and policy integration, using tools such as citizen surveys, acceptance models, and liaison activities with other research and policy initiatives to ensure broad buy-in and interoperability of methodologies. The project positions these mechanisms as necessary for translating research findings into regulatory and funding conditions that reward sustainability and equitable access in the rollout of next-generation networks.
