SIG Unveils a Packaging Breakthrough That Eliminates Aluminum Layers

SIG launched one-litre aseptic carton packs made from its innovative Terra Alu-free + Full Barrier material on July 15, 2025, eliminating the need for an aluminium layer. The new cartons reduce carbon footprint by 29% compared to standard multi-serve cartons while maintaining the protective qualities and 12-month shelf life of traditional SIG aseptic cartons. Already adopted by German retailer Aldi for its Rio d'oro grape juice, the packaging comprises over 80% paper with a thin polymer coating, requiring only the separation of paperboard and polymers during recycling.

This streamlined approach aligns with growing consumer demand for simplified recyclable packaging and supports circular economy trends as brands seek materials requiring fewer separation processes. The innovation represents a significant step toward SIG's goal of increasing paper content in aseptic cartons to at least 90% by 2030, creating a regenerative food packaging system that shields contents from oxygen, light, moisture, and aroma loss.
