Sustainable Fabric Innovation Grants
Bezos Earth Fund Granted $34M for Its Sustainable Fabrics
Adam Harrie — April 30, 2026The Bezos Earth Fund distributed $34 million to four university research teams developing sustainable fashion materials that match the performance of conventional fabrics without the associated environmental costs. Columbia University and FIT are developing textile fibers derived from bacteria fed on agricultural waste. This approach offers a biodegradable, microplastic-free alternative to conventional rayon that uses almost no land.
UC Berkeley is also engineering a high-performance fiber modeled after spider silk, while Clemson University is using gene editing to grow cotton with color and durability built directly into the plant. Additionally, the Cotton Foundation has received funding to preserve the world's most diverse non-GMO cotton seedbank.
The Bezos Earth Fund demonstrates that investment can lay the groundwork for sustainable new fabrics that outperform traditional ones.
