Climate-Friendly Bison Initiatives
USask Explores Long-Term Sustainability in Bison Management
Debra John — March 20, 2026Climate-friendly bison initiatives are gaining importance as the University of Saskatchewan advances a pilot study focused on long-term sustainability in bison management. Supported by the Agriculture Development Fund, the research addresses the need for environmentally responsible approaches as bison are reintroduced to native landscapes.
The project evaluates how bison grazing patterns affect soil health, plant biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. By studying Plains and Wood bison, researchers aim to develop management systems that support regenerative land use while maintaining animal productivity. This includes exploring alternative forage strategies and adapting practices to align with bison-specific behaviors, rather than conventional cattle-based models.
A key component of the initiative is the integration of Indigenous knowledge, ensuring that traditional ecological practices inform sustainable land stewardship. Findings will contribute to scalable frameworks that balance ecological preservation, climate resilience, and responsible agricultural development in bison management.
