Carbon Removal Deals

A new carbon removal deal between Microsoft and AtmosClear marks a significant step in the tech giant’s sustainability journey. The agreement supports the development of what is being called the world’s largest permanent carbon removal project to date, targeting the capture and underground storage of 6.75 million metric tons of CO? over 15 years. Located at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, the project will use bioenergy from sugarcane bagasse and forest trimmings, combining clean energy production with long-term carbon sequestration.

Microsoft’s partnership aligns with its goal to become carbon-negative by 2030, even as its emissions have risen due to growing energy demands from artificial intelligence. The project is also expected to stimulate the local economy with over $800 million in investment and the creation of hundreds of construction and permanent jobs, including revitalizing forestry roles impacted by mill closures.

While political uncertainty looms over the future of U.S. carbon incentives like the 45Q tax credit, this initiative highlights Microsoft’s commitment to advancing innovative climate solutions and supporting sustainable development in agricultural regions.
