Sustainable International Airport Plans
CIDCO Partnered with City of Mumbai on the NMIA
Colin Smith — August 8, 2025The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has formally notified the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), covering approximately 220 villages across Raigad and Thane districts, to guide development around the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). As part of NAINA, CIDCO is preparing a comprehensive mobility master plan that integrates regional rail, metro, and road networks. Proposed initiatives include extending the existing Mumbai Metro Line 12 (Belapur–Pendhar) toward NMIA, adding feeder bus rapid transit corridors, and upgrading key arterial roads such as the Sion–Panvel and Ulwe–Kharghar connectors. The plan also envisions a multi-modal transport hub adjacent to the airport to facilitate seamless transfers between suburban rail, metro, buses, and taxis.
In coordination with state and central agencies—including MahaMetro, Indian Railways, and the National Highways Authority of India—CIDCO’s mobility plan emphasises last-mile connectivity and traffic decongestion. A dedicated “airport express” metro spur and an integrated transit-oriented development (TOD) framework are slated to optimise land use around station nodes, promoting mixed-use clusters for residential, commercial, and logistics activities. Preliminary alignment studies and traffic simulations are scheduled for completion by mid-2025, after which detailed design and phased infrastructure rollout are expected to follow, aligning with NMIA’s operational timelines in 2026.
