Circular Tourism Models
UN Tourism, Iberostar, and Circle Economy Partner for Hospitality Efforts
Debra John — February 18, 2026UN Tourism, Iberostar, and Circle Economy have partnered to promote circular economy strategies within the hospitality sector, with a focus on reducing environmental impact and advancing regenerative tourism practices. The collaboration emphasizes that transitioning hotels toward circular models can significantly lower waste generation, conserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the tourism value chain.
A jointly developed white paper outlines five priority areas for environmental action: procurement, operations, the built environment, corporate culture, and destination engagement. Key measures include sourcing durable, reusable, and biodegradable materials to minimize waste, and optimizing water and energy use in daily operations to reduce resource consumption.
The framework also highlights sustainable building design that incorporates renewable energy systems and bio-based materials to improve energy efficiency and lower carbon footprints. In addition, it promotes staff training and guest awareness to encourage responsible behaviors, while supporting ecosystem restoration and local circular initiatives to strengthen environmental resilience at the destination level.
