Sustainable Fresh Meat Trays

Colruyt Group Introduces the New Sustainable Meat Trays

Belgian retailer Colruyt Group has introduced new, more sustainable trays for its fresh meat products as part of its efforts to reduce packaging waste and meet upcoming EU regulations. The initiative was developed in partnership with Indaver.

The trays are made using recycled polystyrene, sourced from everyday items such as yoghurt pots and foam food trays collected through standard PMD recycling streams. Through an advanced chemical recycling process, this material can now be safely reused in food packaging—an option that was previously limited mainly to recycled PET plastics.

By expanding the use of recycled plastics in food-grade packaging, Colruyt is taking a practical step toward a more circular packaging system. The company says the project will help it comply with the EU requirement for at least 10% recycled content in packaging by 2030, while maintaining food safety and product quality.
