K2LD Architects Thoughtfully Design the G Hotel Kelawai
Kalin Ned — August 6, 2025K2LD Architects' G Hotel Kelawai presents a thoughtful approach to tropical hospitality design by blending contemporary aesthetics with climate-responsive strategies in Penang's urban context.
The 24-story tower incorporates innovative passive design solutions to address Malaysia's challenging tropical climate. Despite this design focus, K2LD Architects was successful in maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic appeal for the establishment's target demographic of business travelers and affluent guests. The hotel's comprehensive amenities include a rooftop infinity pool, multiple dining venues, and executive facilities.
The G Hotel Kelawai building boasts a distinctive double-layered facade system, which combines functional sun-shading with architectural expression. The structure features an outer screen of recyclable aluminum that varies between hollow sections at the podium level and expanded mesh on the tower. This environmental strategy extends to the deep concrete overhangs that serve dual purposes of solar protection and structural support for the facade system.
